Makeup for beginners – building a basic makeup kit

Hey all! Welcome to the first post of 2021! Hope you all had a fantastic/relaxing and safe new year.
We’re going to start 2021 by going back to the basics. There’s so much makeup out there now compared to when I was learning, and I remember how long it took for me to learn the basics just by trial and error. I’m here to help you learn faster than I learned 😂. I also promise to make more YouTube videos for all my fellow visual learners.

Step 1- Primer

The most essential step to any makeup look is a good base. This is about prepping the skin- making sure it’s clean and moisturized then you need a good primer. Primer is essential because it helps the skin hold on to the makeup and also smooths out any fine lines and textures. Texture will show through makeup so you want a flawless base to build on. You want to find a primer that’s appropriate for your skin type, ie: if you have oily skin use a mattifying primer, or if you have dry skin (like me) use a hydrating primer.

Step 2- Colour Correct and Conceal

The next step is to correct and conceal any blemishes or uneven skin tones like dark circles. The colour of corrector used will depend on what you are trying to conceal. I made the following chart as a guideline to finding the right corrector for you.

Step 3- Foundation

I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH -the most important step when picking a foundation is knowing your skin’s undertone and surface tones! It’s more than matching the foundation to your neck. A lot of people’s necks are not naturally the exact same colour as their face. Knowing your undertones will help you find the right shade to balance the colours out.
To figure out your undertones look at the colour of your veins. If your veins look blueish then you have neutral undertones. If your veins look greenish then you have warm undertones, lastly if your veins appear purplish then you have neutral undertones.

Step 4- Highlight

This step is optional. I prefer it because it adds dimension back to the face after the foundation flattens it. Highlighting under the eyes/above the cheekbones will help accentuate your features. For highlighter I usually just use a liquid foundation that is two shades lighter than my foundation.

Step 5- Setting Powder

To achieve an airbrush finish I always set my makeup with translucent powder. This keeps your makeup in place for hours and also smooths out any lines and textures that appear through foundation. (This is the secret to my 14 hour wear makeup with no touchups)

Step 6- Eyeliner and Mascara

When building a basic makeup kit for beginners the best type of eyeliner to start with is pencil. It is much easier to use and correct any mistakes compared to liquid liner. Once your muscles are used to the movement of eyeliner, liquid liner will be a breeze. Lining your lids as close to the lash line as possible creates an illusion of fuller lashes.
