Mindy Kaling is the creator and star of the hit tv series The Mindy Project, (which is one of my favourite shows). Her first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), was on the New York Times Best Sellers list. She was also nominated for an Emmy and was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
As a fan of her show it felt like a requirement that I read Mindy’s new book as she reveals some of the behind the scenes going ons of The Mindy Project. We also get to witness a day in the life of Mindy (which sounds exhausting by the way). This book contains short stories, essays, and anecdotes about careers, dating, and the life of a famous woman laced with satire and whimsy, making it an easy, and enjoyable read.
Mindy shares advice on how to look flawless all the time, “the key to looking gorgeous is to never sit up straight. It implies you have not eaten enough to have the strength to sit like a regular person, which is historically sexy to everyone…[Also] try to befriend a cinematographer and have him or her light you wherever you go” (Kaling, 2015). She also imparts the wisdom that she has learned from other celebrity women, for example Kim Kardashian, “haters are just more people paying attention to you.”
Along with sharing important wisdom on looking glamorous all the time, she shares the hardships she went through to becoming one of the top leading ladies on TV, and one of the most influential women she shares serious life lessons, the kind of life lessons one might find in a Paulo Coelho novel like “you never know what is going to happen,” and
“if you believe in yourself and work hard, your dreams will come true.”
Overall it’s a great “Female Humor/ Brave Minority Voices/Stress-free Summer Reads” (Kaling, 2015).
