Drunk Elephant Intensive Hydration Gel

I heard good things about the Drunk Elephant glycolic night serum and decided to hop on my favourite site (Sephora) and order a bottle of that (amongst many, many other things that are never intended to be in the cart but ‘somehow’ always end up there). However, when I got there I noticed they had another product called the B- Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel, which sounded more appealing to me as I have dry skin.

Normally, because of my dry skin, I prefer to use oils or creams instead of gels. However, because it’s summer I thought a gel would be better as it’s more lightweight. After all, this is an ‘intensive’ gel. What makes it intensive though?

What Is It?

It claims to be an anti-aging gel that replenishes nutrients and visibly brightens and improves skin texture and tone. The Drunk Elephant brand supports the IEF (International Elephant Foundation), which creates a sustainable future for elephants, and is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of African and Asian elephants.

How Does It Work?

The formula contains many ingredients that work together for multiple functions. The formula contains pro- vitamin B and pineapple ceramide, and B- hydra to attract and hold moisture. This combination of ingredients also work to improve the skin barrier function. A mixture of watermelon rind, apple, and lentil complex work together to reduce the look of fine lines. Swertia chirata extract supports the appearance of skin thickness. Bearberry extract acts as an antioxidant, while sodium hyaluronate crosspolymer allows for slow delivery of moisture. When the B-Hydra molecule was created molecular size and pH were kept in mind to be able to penetrate the skin without disrupting the pH balance. Pro-tip: Vitamin B5 works well with vitamin C.

Pros

  • paraben, sulfate and phthalate free
  • the packaging is appealing (to me) because elephants are so adorable!

Cons

  • doesn’t live up to its “intensive hydration” name
  • it needs to be mixed with another cream or oil to get that moisturized feeling
  • pretty pricey ($65 Cad) considering you need to mix it with another moisturizer

Overall it’s a nice product that supports a good cause, however it’s just not intense enough for me. I’m hoping to get my hands on their other products, and hopefully those work out better for me.
