What Makeup Brushes Do I Use? – Makeup Brush Basics

My previous post was about building a basic makeup kit, which included drugstore makeup that I like, but I didn’t discuss what makeup brushes and tools to use. That’s because there’s so many out there that it deserves a separate post.
Again, we’re going to keep it basic here. Perfect for anyone who is just beginning, or isn’t super confident with eyeshadow.

When I first started playing with makeup I only used brushes to apply my makeup (mainly because the only sponges available at the time were those triangle ones that absorbed all the product instead of applying it), so I was skeptical about the beauty blender. However, I am someone that has to test products myself and create my own opinions, because what works for someone may not work for me or vice versa.
Using the beauty blender was an immediate game changer for me! It blended my foundation so flawlessly and made it look natural. Now I find foundation brushes streaky and uneven.

  • Crease Brush

Whenever I’m traveling I always make sure to include a tapered fluffy crease brush in my kit. This helps diffuse the shadow in the crease which gives your eyes definition. Most of the time I’ll just use my bronzer and a tapered brush to add natural definition to my eyes.

  • Shader Brush

Depending on the look I’m going for, sometimes I need a dense shader brush – which helps pack on a lot of pigment, or I may need a fluffy shader brush which diffuses the pigment, leaving a light dusting of colour on the lid.

  • Angled Contour Brush

To apply my contour and blush I use angled brushes because it gives more control and precision.

  • Highlight Brush

I use a fluffy tapered brush to apply highlighter so that it diffuses the colour and makes it look more natural rather than a single streak of metallic highlight on the cheek.

Lastly, I do use oval brushes (they were gifted to me years ago that I don’t even think the company still exists) but you can find many on amazon. I like them for blending out harsh lines. I use cream contour and that can leave harsh lines if not blended properly. You can use a beauty blender for this but I find small oval brushes to be more precise.
